Our Visit with Operation Reboot

February 27th, 2012

By Eve Nasby, VP Business Development, Amerit Consulting

Gary and Kathy Herbold, and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting with the Executive Director of Operation Reboot, Maurice Wilson, last Thursday.

Maurice is a highly energized and energizing visionary whose passion for transitioning veterans is contagious.

He co-founded NVTS, Inc. with a purpose to help transitioning veterans successfully acclimate to civilian life.  Here is an excerpt from their website:

NVTS, Inc. is an emerging San Diego-based 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to assisting veterans in adjusting to civilian life and securing meaningful employment by combining best-practice performance social solutions and techniques. The organization was established by a group of retired high-ranking Naval and Marine Corps officers and workforce development professionals who seek to fill a tremendous gap in the continuum of veteran services.

Our mission is to assist veterans in making a successful transition from military service to civilian life, with all veterans achieving, within their potential, their goals in the transition domains of employment and career, education, living situation, personal effectiveness/wellbeing, and community-life functioning.

We do this by:

  • Providing early-stage cognitive-behavioral educational intervention, to help veterans “re-boot” from military programming;
  • Helping veterans transition successfully from the battle front to the home front;
  • Assisting veterans in developing a successful reentry plan;
  • Minimizing the effects of stress associated with service;
  • Addressing social problems at their root cause;
  • Helping transfer military training to California’s labor force;
  • Creating an effective model that can be replicated nationally that complements existing services

Maurice explained that the remarkable success of their program has resulted in a waiting list of over 300 veterans.  For $2,500.00 per veteran, you can “sponsor” a veteran to go through this 21 day program.  Companies like Union Bank have donated $100,000 to support the efforts. Other leaders in the community have committed to writing a monthly person check to sponsor just one veteran.  As this program continues to grow Operation Reboot seeks partners who are as passionate about this cause as they are.  To learn more about them, click here:

Celebrating Black History Month: Tuskegee Airman Captain Claude Rowe

February 8th, 2012

By Eve Nasby, VP, Business Development, Amerit Consulting

On February 7, 2012 I had the distinguished honor of listening to and meeting Captain Claude Rowe at an event sponsored by the Veterans Employee Group at Carefusion.

Claude Rowe was born and raised in the Detroit area with an aspiration to fly. During WWII though, opportunities for African-Americans in the U.S. armed forces were almost non-existent. Unless you were fortunate enough to get a slot at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, there were no other options in the States.

Rowe, however, knew there was another option in Canada. There were over 8,000 Americans trained as pilots in Canada and a fraction of them were black.  After rigorous training, Rowe received his wings and graduated as a sergeant pilot in late 1944.  He went back to Detroit where he was accepted for pilot training. In 1946, Rowe qualified as a twin-engine pilot and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the last pilot training class to graduate at Tuskegee.

The Tuskegee Airman had many noteworthy accomplishments including 16,000 combat sorties with 115 German aircraft destroyed in the air and another 150 on the ground, and 950 German vehicles destroyed. Their commendations include three Distinguished Unit Citations, about 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, at least one Silver Star, 14 Bronze Stars, 748 Air Medals and eight Purple Hearts.

With a surplus of pilots at the end of World War II – many with long and distinguished combat records – anyone who wanted to stay in had to expand their skill-set. So, Lieutenant Rowe trained as a weather officer at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and then at Chanute Air Force Base, Ill.

The weather officer school was one of the most difficult in the service, with coursework at the first-year graduate school level. Serving as a weather officer and flying when possible, Rowe served mostly overseas, including Austria and twice in the United Kingdom, first as a weather officer at the Burtonwood Depot and later as a WB-50 pilot with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron.

By 1958, with no combat time or college degree, Rowe was passed over for promotion to Major, thus he enlisted as a weather forecaster and retired in 1964 as a Captain.

Captain Rowe is now 93 years old and is a delight to all who meet him. I was drawn by his humility and awed by his courage.  Through a time when this country was entrenched in segregation, Captain Rowe rose above adversity and fought valiantly for her.

Thank you Captain Rowe and all of those with whom you served as part of the Tuskagee Airman. You are a great example of courage, strength and integrity.  Thank you for your service in  defending this great nation.
